Deceit; mankind's favourite pastime

It’s said that it’s only the guy who truly loves his girl that will lie to her; for the truth is too costly. It’s way too expensive if a boy cannot honestly tell his girl that she is not pretty, or that she has a large nose, lest he risks desertion, regardless of whether he is attracted to her character and not her physique per se.  And also, if for some reason or other, a girl cannot tell her guy that he is poor in bed, lest he thinks she is getting the rest elsewhere.

Human beings just can’t handle the truth. It’s like hard liquor. Many keep themselves away from its bottle like others keep away from Johnny Walker...because they know it will simply drive them crazy.

Consider, a boy terribly in love with a girl who only offers him some slight attention. But she does not love him. And would never do so, even if the life of Jesus Christ depended on it. But he will not accept that she does not. Every time she smiles in his direction, oh, his heart sinks like a sponge in water. That is even if the girl was simply laughing at the remains of beans on his white T-shirt. And as for the girl who refuses to believe that her guy is cheating, even when she sees photos of him kissing another girl full-blown on the lips, there’s nothing more I can say.

But this infection has not limited itself to our sentimental side only. It’s the very creed on which our lives stride. Anybody that has heard of the five steps of shock will know by now that when tragedy strikes a human being, their first response is denial. “It can’t be true,” says a woman whose child has died, even when she can clearly see the head cut off. That is not a strange occurrence.

Human beings strive to reject the truth all the time. It’s like some scary world that they are afraid of getting in. Actually words of deceit have got accepted as the norm world over, whether at home, at church, school and so on.

Consider once again; when the cops catch you stealing, they will handcuff you and throw you behind bars. And guess what they will tell the rest of the world...that you are “helping with investigations.” Really?  We all know stories of kids that ask their parents where kids come from. And you don’t want to look at parents when they weave one of the oldest lies on earth, and hence, teaching their kids to lie to theirs as well, a few decades to come. Hardly is there a parent with balls enough to explain to their kid that they were produced by mummy nine months after she slept with daddy. The truth, once again, is way too costly.

And then cue in politicians and you then get a whole new ball game. Some rogue bandit shoots himself to power, feeds off a large chunk of the state coffers to his family, throws out the constitution to allow him be president for life...but when he comes to voters and tells them he is the best democracy there is, they all believe him, as if they are joking.

And then what can we say about religion? Here, not even letters can express how bluntly we have traded lies and dishonesty for gospel truth. You have such passages as  1Timothy 2:11-15 in the Bible, reminding women of just how shallow they are. “A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety,” says the Holy Bible, in clear eligible English. But well, few, if any, are able to come to the fact that the Bible, in all its sacredness, does indeed discriminate against almost half the entire human race.

We have a love for titles, where you will be appointed Senior Domestic Affairs Director, and you will smile your title around the entire town...and yet all that your title says is that you are a house boy.

The US, so famous for inventing and indeed spreading democracy around the world, can still do rogue deals with rogue dictators, as long as the money is right. Societal pillars of morality, like religious leaders of all calibres, endorse bandits into political positions and yet they know well that those are the farthest cry from the rightful owners of the job.

On questions of whether a god exists, of whether he loves you personally, or if he will come back again and do what he does best – ‘punish’, it’s hard not to think, even for a split second, that once again, mankind’s truth-phobia has been reigning all along.

And so our species remains thus; living its life in endless self esteem, as the most advanced animal on earth. The fact that they embrace it in turn makes you wonder whether it actually is the truth.
